2 Phase Interceptive Treatment in Morristown

2 Phase Interceptive Treatment

Treating dental problems early can be key to your child’s oral development.

Every child’s smile is a masterpiece in the making, and Goldkind Family Orthodontics believes in starting this journey to a lifetime of confidence as early as possible. We hope to use the efficacy of the two-phase interceptive treatment on our younger patients so they can develop beautiful, healthy smiles while having as little impact as possible on their formative years.

Understanding How the 2-Phase Interceptive Treatment Works

Two Phases, One Purpose

Two-phase interceptive treatment is a complete orthodontic plan that is made to fix several dental and skeletal problems in two separate stages. Its primary goal is to optimize a child’s oral development, steering it toward a path of wellness, confidence, and harmony.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that kids have their first orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven. This allows our experienced orthodontists to identify potential issues and determine if your child is a candidate for Phase One treatment.

Phase One: Early Intervention

During this phase, Dr. Michael Goldkind will focus on identifying and correcting potential issues before they become major concerns. Depending on the diagnosis, our orthodontist may employ one or a combination of the following appliances and strategies:

Palatal expanders help widen the upper jaw to create sufficient space for permanent teeth to come in properly. Cases of dental crowding, crossbites, posterior crossbites, and difficulties related to small dental arches are common reasons for their use.
In cases where premature loss of baby teeth occurs, space maintainers can be used to preserve the necessary space for permanent teeth, preventing potential crowding issues.
Early detection and correction of bite problems (such as open bites, deep bites, and cross-bites) are essential. These appliances guide the jaws into proper alignment, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth fit together correctly and reducing the risk of future complications.
Functional appliances are used to correct issues related to the alignment and growth of the jaws, particularly in cases of bite problems. Unlike braces, which focus on tooth alignment, functional appliances target the positioning and movement of the jaws themselves.
Regular check-ups during this phase ensure that the treatments are progressing according to plan and that your child’s oral development is on track. They allow Dr. Goldkind to make necessary adjustments to appliances and guarantee satisfactory results.

Resting/Montoring Period:

Following Phase One treatment, a resting and monitoring period allows the remaining permanent teeth to naturally erupt. Retaining devices may or may not be recommended during this phase, depending on individual needs. During this period, regular check-ups are crucial to monitoring growth and development.

Phase Two: Finalizing the Masterpiece

The journey continues with Phase Two, which builds upon the foundation laid in Phase One. Typically shorter and less complex, Phase Two focuses on achieving the ideal alignment and position of permanent teeth in both the upper and lower jaws.

During this second phase, orthodontists use orthodontic treatment options like traditional braces or Invisalign clear aligners to achieve the desired alignment. In essence, two-phase interceptive treatment is about guiding your child’s smile through the critical stages of development.

Dr. Goldkind may recommend traditional braces during Phase Two. These braces consist of metal brackets attached to the teeth and connected by wires. By gradually adjusting the tension on these wires, we guide the teeth into their optimal positions for a well-aligned smile.
Alternatively, Invisalign clear aligners may be used for Phase Two treatment. Invisalign involves a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners (teeth trays) that your child wears over their teeth. These aligners gently and discreetly shift the teeth into place, offering a more flexible and aesthetically pleasing option compared to traditional braces.
